A North Carolina family is reeling while one of their own is missing after Helene’s devastating floods. Kim Ashby, 58, is among the hundreds still unaccounted for in western North Carolina after her home was swept away by raging floodwaters.

BLOWING ROCK, N.C. — First responders and non-profits in Watauga County in western North Carolina have always selflessly served their neighbors, but now after the flood waters from Helene have receded, a food pantry in Blowing Rock says it's the other way around.

As the search for victims of Hurricane Helene enters its second week, the death toll continues to rise. Over 220 people have lost their lives across six states, with North Carolina bearing the brunt of the devastation.

Ashby, a seventh-grade teacher, was with her husband Rod at their newly completed dream home in Elk Park near the Tennessee border when Helene’s torrential rains began Friday and swept their home into a nearby river.
