A small asteroid will join Earth's orbit around the sun for two months beginning Sunday, becoming a 'mini-moon.'

A school-bus-sized asteroid is expected to spend about two months orbiting Earth as a "mini moon" as it gets temporarily caught by Earth’s gravity.

There's a new moon on the horizon. The Earth will gain a second, mini-moon on Sept. 29, but it won't stick around too long. Here's what to know.

“Earth can regularly capture asteroids from the Near-Earth object (NEO) population and pull them into orbit, making them mini-moons,” the RNAAS information reads. “Sometimes, these temporary captures do not complete one revolution before dropping out of orbit and returning to their regular heliocentric trajectories.”

Earth has got a new mini-moon for the next couple of days and it has fascinated people across social media. Albeit, it might not be visible to the naked eye without a telescope due to its small size.

It's an asteroid named 2024 PT5, which entered Earth's orbit on Sept. 29 and will be caught there until Nov. 25, before flying away back into the solar system. Scientists call such phenomena mini-moons.
